choices have branches
I took a class at the beginning of March and the instructor said something that I can’t get out of my head: “Choices have branches.”
What she meant is that nothing we decide is ever really black or white, one way or another. Rather, every choice we make spawns multiple new possibilities.
In some ways, that notion feels overwhelming, as it essentially leads to the need to make more choices and decisions and it doesn’t guarantee a level of settledness. And don’t we like to make decisions to feel some sense of clarity and direction?
But lately I can’t stop marinating over these three words with awe. The idea that making a decision doesn’t lead to certainty, but rather leads to a plethora of opportunity feels like stepping into Narnia. With so much of my life feeling currently up in the air, seeing choices as portals and not end destinations helps ground my desire to feel a sense of suredness about anything.
I’m in the middle of interviewing for a new job, still in the midst of an apartment hunt, and a few other big life things are percolating. Approaching all of this with an air of possibility suddenly seems like a game of choose your own adventure. There’s a playfulness and curiosity that’s bringing lightness to a heavier chapter in my life. It might not always feel like such a clear and freeing approach, but for now it does the trick and I’m sticking with it.
