magic on sunday: 30 extra minutes
in an unlikely event, i was running 30 minutes early for a 9am appointment near bryant park. i took a free copy of time out new york as i emerged from the subway, and decided that the 45 degree weather meant that it was warm enough to pass the extra time outside in the sunshine.
the ice skating rink was in front of me, and as i approached, i thought it would be a nice little place to sit and people watch as i read. going in circles in front of me were men in suits, tourists, and people who obviously did this every day - they had their own skates!
before i could even find a seat to settle into though, i was overcome with the notion that i had to join these people. something inside of me needed to be on the ice too.
i walked over to the counter, dropped $20 to rent skates and a lock, laced up real tight, and bambi-d on to the ice. after a few shaky seconds, i was skating in harmony with the motley crew of characters in the rink.
the sun was shining, frank sinatra was playing overhead, and i couldn’t stop smiling. i asked a stranger to take a photo of me, to send to my mom, i told him.
these extra 30 minutes made for one of the most nyc moments i’ve had in a while, and for someone who’s lived here nearly 8 years, i thought that i was done feeling this sort of magic.
i’m sharing this story with you today because i had to write it down. i want to remember the feeling of stumbling upon something magical right in front of your face for a long time.
