magic on sunday: boxing up summer
there was a tweet i saw a few weeks ago that said something to the effect of, “don’t try to do anything productive in august”, claiming that doing so would be futile against the remaining summer energy. as it scrolled across my timeline, i felt as if that tweet was written especially for me.
in the month of august i went to south carolina, went through 3 interviews, searched high and low for the perfect apartment, went to california, quit my job, packed up an apartment, all while trying to soak up the increasingly shorter summer days.
i’ve always had a fraught relationship with the summer. when i was younger and concerned about always having a full agenda, the longer summer days came with a side of anxiety to fill the extra sunny hours with places and plans. now that i’m older and have learned to zen out and appreciate still and slow time in the sun, i’m keenly aware of the fact that summer is just 93 days long and my unencumbered days are numbered.
really though, it’s inconsequential because the last few weeks have felt like a blind sprint, only really being able to think about what’s next on the to-do list. there hasn’t been any stopping to smell the roses, and maybe the only moment of quick reflection i’ve had was during my brief cry while packing up my apartment of the last three years.
my only relief in a summer that’s ending quite abruptly and unceremoniously is the undeniable coziness that comes with fall. there’s only a few more boxes to unpack, then i’m ready.
