magic on sunday: for when you're on autopilot

you know when you’re driving and all of a sudden you have to stop short?
the radio’s on, the road is open, you’re cruising.
it’s not that you aren’t paying attention, it’s just that you’re on autopilot. you’re basically aware of what’s going on, but maybe you aren’t paying close enough attention to realize that the car in front of you is slowing down for a yellow instead of gunning through it.
you don’t hit him, but you have to slam the breaks a little harder to come to a stop.
i felt this way last week when i took a mediation class. my life has more or less felt like it’s on autopilot all summer, and suddenly, laying on a yoga mat and wrapped in a blanket at 1:30 on a wednesday afternoon, i was mentally slamming the breaks.
i’d like to tell you that meditation and mindfulness are core parts of my routine, but the truth is that when it comes to those things, my approach is pretty half assed. i’m motivated by high energy and active situations, so anything that falls outside feels inconsequential. those 30 minutes of mindfulness on wednesday reminded me that there are benefits to slowing down and being a little more conscious of my body, emotions, and thoughts.
it won’t be an overnight change, but i’m excited to carve out little ways to embrace stillness and awareness. this week’s playlist is a start, with songs i wouldn’t mind listening to while laying in bed (or my personal favorite chill spot, the middle of my living room floor) being still.
