magic on sunday: love after love
this week my favorite poet, derek walcott, passed away. i remember studying his piece “love after love” in high school and feeling so moved by such beautiful words and imagery. it was like for the first time, something resonated with me in a way nothing ever had before.
“love after love” is about being home in yourself. reminding yourself of who you are and taking refuge there. the perfect poem for adolescent meghan, the perfect poem for not-so-adolescent meghan.
it’s copied below, and i hope you love it as much as i have.
love after love
the time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,
and say, sit here. eat.
you will love again the stranger who was your self.
give wine. give bread. give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
sit. feast on your life.
