magic on sunday: throw on your poncho (late edition!)
sometimes you go on vacation and don’t consider the fact that where you’re going is about to enter its rainy season. the plane ticket is free, the accommodations are cheap, and a beach with some of your favorite people are waiting on the other side of your flight.
that’s where i found myself last week, as i landed in rainy costa rica. at the airport, a man with a missing tooth was holding a sign with my name, and in my broken spanish i told him that it was me that he was looking for. he flagged my driver and i was off on a 3ish hour journey to the west coast. i told my driver that i’d probably take a nap and he advised me to do so before the last 45 minutes because it was unpaved and…bumpy. a few hours in, i was startled awake by torrential downpours and an off-roading-in-a-van experience that had my life vaguely flashing before my eyes.
while the majority of my days in costa rica were sunny, it wasn’t without a significant amount of rain. there was one evening where we planned to take a walk to the beach and every time we attempted to go, it would start raining again. after about two false starts, we grabbed our rain coats (or if you’re me, your poncho), some beer, and headed towards the beach. the mud from the unpaved dirt road flicked the backs of our legs as we marched towards the beach, and we all kind of laughed at our determination to not let the rain steal this moment. we caught a quick glimpse of the semi-sunset and then took refuge at a nearby beach front restaurant, covered from the rain.
i remember walking in my poncho and feeling so absurdly proud of myself for brining it, knowing it would come in handy. but what really stuck out to me about that moment was that there was never going to be a good time to go to the beach that day - that we would have missed out on that little fun adventure if we waited for the clouds to part. just like there’s no good time to go on vacation when you have a busy job. or to tell someone how you feel. or wait for the perfect sign to do what you’ve always been wanting to do.
if something’s got you waiting for the perfect timing, throw on your poncho and get to it.
