magic on sunday: vito from brooklyn
the best thing about taking a taxi home from work is that you can hear vito from brooklyn call in to the radio and request super freak.
you get in, buckle up, and are unsure if this route is actually faster than the subway, but it’s 9:50pm on a tuesday, you’re tired, and your body needs to be carried home.
there was a time when taking a taxi was a luxury, even on nights that necessitated it. a 24 year old woman can’t take the subway alone at 2:30 in the morning on a saturday from the les to the ues and feel safe. so you eat a $25 ride and stay sustained on dollar slices and hamburger helper for the week.
it’s a few years later and now you don’t think twice about this kind of thing, whether the company is paying for it or not. as the cab meanders and zig zags through the streets of lower manhattan, you’re almost thankful you have motion sickness and can’t look at your phone because you’re forced to peer out the window.
on the approach to the brooklyn bridge, you remember all the times you’ve walked across it, and that for a long time, where it spits you out on the other side was your only understanding of brooklyn. you’re reminded of the summer after college when you visited a boy interning at goldman sachs who lived in brooklyn heights. you lost your phone in a taxi (a taxi he paid for) going over the bridge after a night out.
someone who lived on wall street called your mom at 3am to tell her he had your phone, and your sister sends you a facebook message the next morning with their information. you trek back over the bridge, go into a luxury building for the first time, and are greeted by a model in a bikini. she smiles and hands you your phone as you try to get a glimpse inside the apartment.
this week’s trip over the bridge is like most others, but there’s always an alluring feeling when you’re zooming between boroughs. you stare at the light trails and force yourself to cement this moment, unsure why, but maybe just because you want to remember what it’s like to hear vito from brooklyn call in to request super freak.
