magic on sunday: when you roofie your hair
this is a note about my hair, but there’s a point, i promise.
maybe five or so years ago, i would wear my hair straight pretty often. i’d wash it at home, and then run around the corner to the dominican salon and pay somewhere between $10 and $15 dollars for them to blow dry it straight. when you’ve been blessed with a head full of thick curly hair, this is something you don’t think twice about paying for.
but i knew the tricks of the dominican salons - sometimes they’d slip a little bit of relaxer product in your hair if they spotted what seemed to be a complicated curly mane. one day i was running late and didn’t have time to wash my hair on my own, and decided to risk it. i went in, they washed and dried my hair straight, and a few days later i washed it and waited for my curls to air dry and bounce back.
except they didn’t. i’d been slipped some relaxer at the salon (“my hair got roofied!’ i told people). my thick curly hair was now this annoying mess of half stingy straight, half almost curly frizz.
i went to my fancy curly hair salon and they basically told me that it’d take awhile to get it back to where it should be. so what followed was an obsession with not fucking up my hair. i didn’t use any heat on it, i deep conditioned it regularly, got trims frequently, i slathered coconut oil all over it.
this morning i glanced in a mirror and was like, man, my curls look real good. and then i remembered the roofie incident. my hair’s been in better shape for the last two or so years, but it took so much time to get there.
and that reminded me about the patience and commitment that it takes to just get from a to z sometimes. not just when your hair gets roofied, but with almost anything we want to achieve in this instant-gratification-obsessed culture we (i...) live in.
i'll likely forget my own advice soon, but i hope to remember it the next time i'm having a good hair day.
